Emily Holt Best is an artist in Raleigh, NC

My home studio is clean and organized. Canvasses are neatly stacked up against an easel which holds a work-in-progress that needed to dry. A little cart from Home Goods holds paint arranged like a rainbow (#homeedit). I open the blinds to see true color, roll out two paint covered bath rugs from a couple houses ago as a makeshift dropcloth, and lay my subject painting across them. My pallet and glass jar of brushes await. I start an audio book. My mise en place is ready so I close the French door of my studio and sit on the floor to work for what may be fifteen minutes or two hours.

I am highly energetic and super extroverted. Painting is my alone time. Painting forces focus. Painting is challenging. Painting is calming. Painting is therapeutic. Painting allows me to be creative. And paintings are pretty.

I am originally from Eastern North Carolina, and I have a Bachelors and Masters in Art Education from East Carolina University. I worked as a high school art teacher for nearly a decade. The classroom context allowed me to nurture my students’ skills in drawing, painting, pottery, and art history.
